Quirky Moonee Valley Grasslands walk

Come along to Moonee Valley to do a walking tour of some unusual grasslands. JH Allen Reserve is a well-used civic space with a grassland in the middle of it. Arcade Way is the almost-secret internal park of a Walter Burley-Griffin (of Canberra fame) estate, that continues to shelter the original grasslands of the region. The City of Moonee Valley has upgraded the park with a playground and murals now, making it a truly special urban grassland.

We’ll keep walking to the Avondale Heights Community Garden (AHCG) to see one more patch of remnant grassland and enjoy the transformation the community have created. If you are keen, you can continue to the Crossway, another Burley-Griffin grassland nearby.

Start: JH Allan reserve – there’s heaps of parking. For those on public transport, it’s only a 2-minute walk from bus stops on Milleara Rd / Buckley St: Routes 903 and 465 (both stop at Essendon station), 469 and 406 (which links with tram 57/Footscray Station).

Beware parking at Milleara Mall has a 3-hour limit.

There are toilets, water and shelter at JH Allan Reserve and AHCG, and playgrounds at JH Allan Reserve and Arcade Way if you’re bringing kids.

Remember to dress for the weather, wear sensible clothing and bring water.
