What does it involve?
As a bushwalking leader, you can lead as many walks, rides or excursions as you like, be it one a year or 10 a year. You might like to lead a bushwalk, overnight hike, bus excursion, camping trip, bike ride or special nature activity such as birding, nature-based art creation or an interpretive walk.
Leading an activity involves:
- Choosing and organising your activity
- Taking bookings
- Coordinating participants to meet at the right place and right time with the right gear
- Leading your activity on the day including keeping the group together, happy and comfortable, organising rest breaks and experiencing unique and interesting places
- Sending a report of your activity to VNPA.

Interested in becoming a bushwalking leader? You’ll need to:
- Join some of our bushwalks to get an idea of how our leaders run their trips.
- Contact us to express your interest in being a bushwalking leader
- Be mentored by an experienced leader which involves:
- Talking though and learning our guidelines and procedures
- Organising and leading two activities accompanied by an experienced mentor
- Gaining final approval and getting set up as a VNPA bushwalking leader with support from VNPA staff.
You also need to have a current Working with Children Check and First Aid qualification.
