Victoria's ancient volcanic grassy plains are almost gone
Picture this: rolling plains decorated with wildflower meadows, stretching from the western suburbs of Melbourne to the South Australian border.
Critters, big and small, fossick, sleep and breed among the flowers and grasses. Striped Legless Lizards, Golden Sun Moths, Fat-tailed Dunnarts, Growling Grass Frogs.
That’s what the Victorian Volcanic Plains once looked like. But since colonisation nearly all of Victoria’s rich volcanic grasslands have been cropped, ploughed or bulldozed.
Incredibly, some patches of remnant grasslands survived.
They are precious glimpses into the landscapes cared for by first nations for millenia. But even these legacy grasslands are destined for the bulldozer.
Because of a lack of proactive nature laws, even small patches surviving grasslands are under threat.
To keep these legacy grasslands alive in Victoria, our leaders need to step up and protect them.
