Young people leading nature protection

Our new youth-led initiative inspires, mobilises and engages young adults in nature conservation through citizen science, advocacy, workshops and bushwalks.

We’re working on ways for young people to come together to take part in nature conservation in Victoria.

In 2022 and 2023 we’ll run special youth team activities, including:

  • Snorkelling and chips on the beach, as part of the Great Victorian Fish Count in early December 2022
  • Bushwalking and citizen science field trips
  • Seminars with expert speakers
  • Events, and much more!

Get involved

If you are a young adult with a thing for nature, we’d love to have you take part in our team.

How the Youth Team came about

The Youth Team Advisory Group was recently established to provide valuable feedback on innovative ways to engage young adults in nature conservation.

Their journey began earlier this year at Cape Conran on Gunaikurnai Country with the ReefWatch and NatureWatch teams, involving three days of citizen science, community outreach, and valuable workshops.

The group both experienced and discussed the value of engaging youth in conservation, while envisioning what youth engagement might look like at a bigger scale. This laid the groundwork for forming the advisory group.

The Youth Team Advisory Group

Coming from different backgrounds but with a shared passion for connecting people with nature, the advisory group is currently made up of a convenor and up to six young adult volunteers.

The Youth Team Advisory group meets monthly and aims to lead a program to inspire, mobilise and empower young Victorians to love and protect nature through upskilling, hands-on experiences, and fantastic events.
