Reef Watch Victoria
What is Reef Watch?
Reef Watch is a way of helping community members get actively involved in monitoring the health of their favourite reefs along the coast. In so doing, they can contribute to the growing knowledge base for temperate marine ecosystems.
The Reef Watch website and educational initiatives distribute this information to the wider community, encouraging better policies and actions to protect Victoria’s marine environment.
More than 250 divers regularly survey 180 species at reef sites along the Victorian coast. They record habitat and species information on each dive using a monitoring kit designed by marine scientists.
Seminars and workshops are held each year to help volunteers to improve their knowledge and skill in identifying marine life.
Great Victorian Fish Count
Reef Watch also coordinates the Great Victorian Fish Count, an annual "snapshot" of the distribution and abundance of 25 keystone reef fish species in Victorian waters.
This year's event will be in December and runs for two weeks. So why not “Take a Dive that Counts”.
