Quarantine Station safe in Victorian hands
Federal Heritage Minister Peter Garrett and Victorian Environment Minister Gavin Jennings confirmed on June 2 that agreement had been reached on the 90 hectare National Heritage listed Quarantine Station area at Point Nepean.
The site was officially transferred to the Victorian Government at a ceremony later in June. It is to be managed by Parks Victoria.
Mr Garrett advised the Point Nepean Community Trust of the agreementreached. The Trust will cease to have a role at Point Nepean.
This transfer delivers on an important election commitment of both governments. It should ensure that the special values of the site are protected, and enable safe public access so everyone can share in one of our National Heritage treasures.
The VNPA congratulates the two governments on achieving such a positive outcome and will be closely monitoring Parks Victoria's plans and actions at the site to ensure that they meet the above aims.
Caring for Nature Day, help us celebrate!
In view of this historic agreement the VNPA's 2009 Caring for Nature Day picnic will be held at the Point Nepean Quarantine Station. The picnic will be on Sunday 22 November.
It will be a great opportunity to celebrate the successful campaign and see a part of Point Nepean that has been difficult to visit in the past. We should be able to see some of the 1850s heritage buildings.
