We’re here to stay, and to make sure nature stays!

Did you know that for 60 years the VNPA has been at the forefront of protecting Victoria's unique natural heritage?

We have. And yes, we intend to continue.

The efforts of the VNPA have helped protect our natural state treasures in parks, which have grown from just 13 small national parks in 1952 to 45 national parks, 24 marine national parks and sanctuaries, and 55 other parks protected under the National Parks Act, and many other hundreds of conservation reserves!

The VNPA has consistently punched above its weight and we're justifiably proud of the leading role we've played in:

  • creating the Murray River's new River Red Gum national parks
  • creating the Alpine National Park and removing damaging cattle grazing from the park
  • saving Wilsons Promontory from commercial development
  • getting protection for Box-ironbark national parks and reserves in Central Victoria
  • establishing marine national parks and sanctuaries.

And dealing with many more issues over the decades.

Did you also know that since European settlement in Victoria, we have lost about 70% of our native vegetation through land clearance?

This rapid development has taken a heavy toll: 44% of our native plants and 30% of our native animals are either extinct or threatened with extinction.

These statistics send a clear message: loss of our natural areas and biodiversity demands urgent action.

We see the problems, but we also see the logical and thoughtful solutions. This is why we're at the forefront of conservation issues in Victoria and, with our supporters, we give nature a big, clear voice.

Right now, this voice is raised in urgency

On behalf of all our native plants and animals we are calling on the government not to give away our natural heritage and the future of our unique plants and animals!

Naturally, we want the government to ensure protection of our remaining biodiversity, including tackling the thorny issue of invasive pests that are wrecking sensitive ecologies. We also work hard defending our parks against threats such as the return of damaging cattle grazing.

Naturally, we want the government to redirect resources into managing our parks and no, we don't think large-scale commercial development in national parks or near fragile conservation areas is a good idea.

We never gave up on establishing the Alpine National Park.

Naturally, we are committed to getting the government to greatly improve fire management, especially by modifying fuel reduction burn programs, so that both the public and our natural areas are better protected.

And if our marine life had a voice, it would say we need an all-embracing marine plan and new marine national parks that would go along way towards better managing and protecting the remaining 94.7% of Victorian marine waters.

Speak up, dig deep!

Please donate to the VNPA. We've been campaigning and conserving our natural heritage for 60 years, and there's more to do.
