Jenny Barnett Tribute Conservation Campaign

Jenny Barnett worked with the Victorian National Parks Association
as both a staff member and volunteer for more than 25 years.
She was a trained zoologist, dedicated conservationist, and
a recognised expert in planning and conservation.

Jenny and her husband John lost their lives in the Black Saturday
bushfires of 2009. They were caught by fire at their home in
Steels Creek. The fire moved so fast, they didn't even have time
to turn on the generators to run their fire sprinklers.

Why has VNPA established this Tribute Campaign?

Jenny would have been appalled that conservationists are being
blamed for the bushfires. At the time of her death, she was working
on a major fire ecology project, so that we could better understand
the impacts - both positive and negative, of fire.

The Jenny Barnett Tribute Conservation Campaign will be an
ongoing tribute to Jenny, honouring her commitment and
dedication, and will try, to some extent to fill the enormous gap
she has left by ensuring her work continues.

How can I contribute to this Campaign?

Donations can be made in 3 secure options:

  1. Online
  2. Phone the VNPA on (03) 9347 5188
  3. Make a donation by mail/fax using our donation form

You can also email your tribute to VNPA, which we will then add to Jenny's tribute page. Please make it clear in the subject line that you are happy for your dedication to be made public on our website.

Please tell your friends and family and invite them to support the campaign.

Funds raised will be used to:

  • Provide informed, thoughtful, science-based input to the
    Royal Commission into the bushfires.
  • Respond to any backlash against national parks and conservation after the fire. You'll be helping people understand that fire management is a complex issue, and different responses are needed for each location depending on the local ecology and human safety needs.
  • Continue Jenny's work on intelligent planning for nature conservation.
  • Promote research into the protection of native plants and animals.
