Stand up for our seas and shores

Dear Premier Ted Baillieu,

Victoria's marine and coastal environment is incredibly diverse and unique, with more than 90% of plants and animals in Australia's southern waters found nowhere else on earth.

However, over the past eight years no major progress has been made in improving the protection of our marine world.

We need to build greater resilience into our marine and coastal environments to help them cope with climate change and human impacts. Enhancing the protection of our seas and shores to international standards is an important first step.

I request the Coalition commit to the following actions, which are vital if we are to protect our fragile marine environment before it changes forever:

- Undertake a comprehensive, independent, science-based assessment of Victoria's marine habitats, values and threats.

- Compile a detailed statewide marine action plan to address marine pests, pollution and climate change impacts.

- Introduce new marine planning legislation to protect and manage all of Victoria's marine areas.

- Reconsider your decision to rule out creating more marine national parks and keep an open mind to the science.

We have an excellent opportunity at the next election to create a healthy ocean for everyone.
