In 2010 drought breaking rains gave Victoria's Murray River and its River Red Gum parks their first decent drink in more than a decade.
Yet despite all that rain the diagnosis for the Murray remains terminal - nothing can survive on one decent drink every 20 years!
This lack of water has had a devastating impact on both the river itself and the River Red Gum ecosystems that rely on it.
Scientific advice clearly shows that the Murray River needs up to 7600 billion litres of water if it is to be returned to health. I am concerned that the irrigation lobby will once again prevent the Murray being given the water it needs.
We need a national plan of action to save our Murray and secure long-term water allocations for Victoria's River Red Gum national parks.
Right now you have an opportunity to make this happen through the Murray-Darling Basin Plan.
You have the opportunity to determine whether or not our Murray and its River Red Gum national parks are around for future generations to enjoy.
I strongly urge you to ensure Australia comes up with a national action plan to save our Murray and ensure the future survival of Victoria's magnificent River Red Gum national parks.
